I have wallpaper and a border that were hung with some type of adhesive glue rather than paste. Walls are sheetrock, paper is 7 years old. Under the paper is paint. I can't get the adhesive to come off the wall. What can I use to dissolve it? I've used DIF and CHOMP without success. It is a sticky putty-like residue. HELP!!!!!

It sounds like someone may have used a Vinyl over Vinyl paste to hang the paper that you are removing. Does it look like stringy white paste residue as it begins to lift off the wall surface? ...like leftover Elmers Glue All? If so, is the painted surface, under the paste residue, holding up to your removal process without the wallboard being damaged? A common problem that has turned many people away from wallcoverings is the nightmares caused by the use of the wrong type of adhesive or improperly prepping the wall surface before hanging. Your issue sounds like the former.

I also think it sounds suspiciouly like a border adhesive, which is a polymer based adhesive rather than a "normal" starch based adhesive.

As Chris says, Mike Zekich from Safe and Simple will be able to help if indeed it is a Vinyl Over Vinyl or Border adhesive. They make a solution (#826) that I have found does what it is advertised to do, make the removal of VOV and Border adhesives possible.
