View Full Version : Papering over contact paper

We recently repapered the inside of a travel trailer, because of the difficulty with removing the original contact paper we "papered over" some areas with a vinyl wall covering using wallpaper glue. That was about 4 months ago. Now large areas of the vinyl paper are beginning to fall off the wall.
After the fact, I've found out that almost nothing will adhere to contact paper.
Is there anything out there that we can use to re-paper the walls that will stick to contact paper?
Thanks

Robert,
You can try a primer from Romans called R35. It will most likely adhere no problem, then you can hang over it. All Pro also sells it under their label and it's 670. Some may also recommend using vinyl over vinyl adhesive, but I have no experience with that despite hanging professionally for 22 years in residences. Hope this helps. Jeff

I agree with Jeff, use a primer .
I would opt for something like Shieldz myself but almost any wallcovering prep coat or primer will work.
However you do need to prep the contact paper before you prime .
Wash it and possibly degloss it .
Call Zinnsser (they're number is on the can of Shieldz or R-35).
They may say to wipe it with mineral spirits or a deglossing agent.:help:

I would try sanding the finish on the contact paper before priming. 220 grit or 180 grit. The de-glosser may work but sometimes that can react badly with some papers like contact paper. It is always a concern when I have to paint or paper over very slick surfaces, so I usually give the primer more time than suggested, and apply an even, thin coat of primer .
I then sand the coat of primer lightly to give a little more tooth and check for adherence of primer.
