Commercial application, hotel bath rooms. Walls (outside the shower!) are 1"x1" ceramic tile, and we want to put 15 to 20 oz. vwc on the walls. We are considering laminating drywall over the tile, but it has been suggested that there is a heavy duty "backing paper" that can be installed over the ceramic tile that will allow for installation of the vwc. The drywall is presenting some dimensional problems. Is there such a thing as a paper that wiill cover the joints in the tile and allow a smooth installation?

Yes, you have a couple options.
Cavalier Wall Liner (http://wallliner.com/) makes a great heavy-duty non-woven bridging liner.
Flexiwall (http://www.flexiwall.com/) makes a great product called faster plaster, or plaster in a roll. This application would be considered permanent.
I like to coat any slick surface with a bonding primer, prior to installing anything. Check out XIM Clear (http://www.ximbonder.com/products_detail.asp?id=30).
