yes, wallboard. i think i may have found something. one gallon container and it says it is for hanging heavy wallpaper, fabric, foil... they refer to it as a clay. not remembering the brand name.

You can hang canvas with a number of pastes, and the clay should be fine, strength-wise. You mentioned a clear coat, though, so I'm not sure what you're doing, what result- the look, for example, or as a liner- that you are trying to achieve.
If I wanted an unblemished finish on the canvas:
-paste the wall, using paint brush and roller. Get the paste all the way to the edge
-cut the canvas into strips, longer than the wall space
-mist the back with water, and roll it up, face side in. Pre-shrinks it.
-put strips in plastic bag, 20-30 min.
-re-paste the first section for the first strip. It should be darn tacky, and pretty dry but still moist
-hang the first piece; trim the edges to within 1/2-1"; push all edges in
-repeat pasting & trimming sequence for 2nd strip, overlapping the edges at the seam by about 1-2" (keep it even as possible). Double-cut through both layers when the paste is just about dry; you'll have to keep checking it to figure timing.
-repeat sequence for the rest. Use your mister if something dries too quickly.
-trim all the edges last. Shield the canvas withh a broad knife to keep the material from getting wet if cleaning trim or ceiling line: it may let go and shrink back.
Keep paste off the face. It can be washed off, but some will get pushed in the fabric, and would show differently under a coating.
