I am working on pricing a ceiling of Geode Flexible Bead Wallcovering by Maya Romanoff. There are 30 strips (28” X 9yd), 18’ ceiling height. The stuff is made with a black background, and the ceiling has been painted black. I have confidence that I can trim and install it, but I’m not sure of the best adhesive. At present, I’m leaning toward using non strippable clay. One coat on the ceiling, let it dry, paste again and dry (moist) hang. Have any of you tried this? Will this system provide a strong enough bond to hold the excessive weight of this product?

Slight correction: The sheets are 9 feet, not 9 yd. That would really be one heavy sheet! Gary

Gary,
You got my heart pounding just thinking about 30 strips of this product on a ceiling.I have done 3 or 4 ceiling jobs with "Geode' and "Beadazzled" but usually 6'to 7' strips never with full length strips. If my memory is correct, we used vov on our ceiling applications but reconfirm that with Maya's tech guy, Glen.He is very helpful ,as he is an installer ,and when you call Maya they transfer you to him in the field.Yes, we coat the ceiling first ,then again to tack it up, we also paste the panels , being extra careful not to allow adhesive to wrap under to glass beads( you have to keep it clean as silk). At this point the panel has become quite heavy and will require at least one other person to help apply it to the ceiling ,push pins will help,I use a stiff bristle vinyl brush to adhere it to the ceiling not letting go with other hand until it is secure( I can feel it now)a third person would help.A good walkboard and or scaffolding setup is essential."Geode " is harder to trim than "Beadazzled" once installed so try to cut the pieces to fit from the backside using template method or measuring each piece individually, the black primer will help. The product does grow so keep that in mind when precutting you do not want to have to trim it after it is installed. The color is "Caviar' and can be touched up with black permanent markers where a bead may have fallen off, etc. If I think of anything else I'll post it.I hope you are younger than I,eat your "Wheaties"

Thanks Guy, your post is very helpful. I got the job referral from the Cleveland Donghia show room. I do intend to impress!

What brand or type of VOV did you use? Some are like Elmer's glue, while others are more like a modified clay.

I can almost guarantee that I am not younger than you.

I met Glenn Giacinto when I took the Maya class in Chicago in '05. He is very knowledgeable. If you want to see who all took the four classes, check it out here http://www.ngpp.org/workshops/maya.php.

I have one other hanger who will help on the install - now I'm thinking of maybe adding another. (Tim, still interested?)

Gary,
The Donghia showroom has quite the reputation of being the premiere contemporary showroom in America.I have been doing the showroom in Atlanta since they opened here and they are great people to work with and are loyal to someone who treats them professionally and is conscientious with their work. They picked up the "Maya Romanoff " line a few years ago and after installing their line for all these years I must say it has been challenging and has helped increase my skill level.I have hung alot of different types of wallcoverings and fabrics and this particular product will test even the most skilled. That being said ,it is a beautiful product and is doable. We used Roman vov( if in fact vov was specified I'm sorry I can't remember for sure) as I said double check on that,I'm pretty sure it was vov.I have the paint store put the vov in the 5 Gallon shaker for a few minutes then whip it again on site .Just be particularly careful as you well know it would be impossible to get that vov off the face of the beaded glass. We paste each strip individually using a worn out 3/8 nap to apply adhesive moving the strip to each side of the table to paste each edge pulling the roller up and off at the edge with little pressure. The reason I keep emphasizing cleanliness is because I saw$ 7000 worth of this product ruined last year by a hanger in Ala.You can't wash it.

Gary,
I am concerned about you having to get your booked strips up 16' high without them flopping open and ripping from it's own weight.I had this happen before trying to get a strip up 8' high.It unfolded and ripped in half, over $200 down the drain. While discussing your job with my table man ,we were thinking you might need to develop a two velcro strap system to strap around the booked strip to hold it together. The weight also concerns me although one man may be able to walk it up an 8'or 12' ladder ,a lift or a hoist system would be to your advantage.Like I don't have enough to worry about with this metallic "Carolyn Ray " I am hanging. Here is a recent "Geode " wall we did in the showroom

I have given that a lot of thought, and have come up with a partly formulated plan: I would cut a sheet of lauan under-layment the width of the Geode, paste the material on the board, clamp it down, and lift the whole thing to the ceiling using three people. Maybe lift it up to the platform using a rope wrapped around the board/Geode combination.

Now having said all that, the potential customer didn't like my price and went with someone else.:cuss:

My bet - once that "someone else" finds out what they're getting into, "someone else" will like your price much more. :roflmao:
