I have a finished wood ceiling to bid on. The ceiling is coffered and it is all wood. The bid is to include papering the ceiling with a Cole & Son . After looking at the nice finish and beautiful ceiling ,the customer and I have questions about how to prepare the ceiling , so that it could be stripped someday without causing damage to the wood finish. I am thinking of a couple different ideas , but would like feedback to them ,as well as any experiences of your own. The thought is that the ceiling would need to be refinished after the wallpaper is removed.

I don't know what the ceiling was finished with and I'm fairly certain , I won't be able to find out, but I am trying to :) .

(1) My first thought was to use a clear sealer, such as Gardz or Draw Tite and a blankstock liner paper , leaving a clear finish that can be refinished at some point in the future.
(2) The other is to use a prep coat such as Swing , line with B/S and hoping to be able to remove that and refinish the ceiling.
(3) Simply sand/scuff the ceiling, roll on some adhesive as a "size" and line with B/S.

Thanks,:tiphat:

Not having seen the ceiling I would say go with your first thought...Guardz or Draw Tite. Wood moves a lot be sure that the ceiling is very secure.

I was confronted with the same situation last month in a home elevator with wooden walls and ceiling.I chose Gardz and blankstock.I wouldn't even consider the third option .

Sounds like it will be done with Gardz and liner or muslin...thanks everybody!

I like the muslin idea. It would make for an easy removal. Obviously, the ceiling would have to be cleaned and sanded before repainting after the removal.
