New poster. Doing research on wallpaper and paperhanging markets. Thought I'd share these recent articles, some of which are DIY-hype but still interesting and good publicity.

Find a picky installer. Price matters, but I'd go for passion any day.

"American designers are rediscovering what the British have always known--wallpaper is one of the best ways to bring personality into a house," says John Loecke, an interior designer based in Brooklyn, N.Y., who has recently added wallpaper to homes in Louisiana, Iowa and Connecticut.

After years of homeowners opting for faux finishes and painted accent walls, Poles sees wallpaper making a comeback. “You can get the same interesting look with wallpaper,” he said. “The advantage is that it’s easier to fix a wallpaper you don’t like than to repaint a faux finish.”
In addition to eco-friendly products, Poles sees more interest in bold, black-and-white designs that work well in a variety of settings.

Wallpaper is back, and is being used in every room including the bathroom. The quality of the paper and the glue is far superior to the last huge wave of papers in the 70s and 80s.

These days it isn’t just the well-heeled who are driven to design; everyone thinks that wallpaper or an iPhone reveals something about their character, and you never know who you’ll find in a design shop. “Figurines are having a complete resurgence and a lot of skater boys are coming in to buy Lladró,” says Dave Alhadeff, owner of the design store The Future Perfect in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.
“OK, they’re now in their late 20s and semi-famous graffiti artists, but I couldn’t have predicted these guys’ love of the decorative object.” The same holds true with wallpaper. “I’m often surprised that so many men, dudes with chain wallets from the neighborhood, are drawn to wallpaper,” he says. “It’s black on black damask and a little punk, but I’d have thought women would control that purchase decision.”

When they want to know how to avoid the problem, send 'em on over.

Good stuff you're finding.

The team found that those ubiquitous triangular tears arise from interactions between three inherent properties of adhesive materials: elasticity (stiffness), adhesive energy (how strongly the adhesive sticks to a surface) and fracture energy (how tough it is to rip).

The researchers developed a formulation that predicts the angle of the triangle formed, based on those three properties.

They also figured out just how those triangular tears arise. As the strip is pulled, energy builds up in the fold that forms where the tape is peeling from the surface. The tape can release that energy in two ways: by unpeeling from its surface and by becoming narrower, both of which it does.I knew it, I knew it, I knew it...
