I have to install 8-4yd panels on a ceiling. It's hand painted crinckled paper,Twigs-Chamomile design. The ceiling is perfectly smooth with a latex finish paint on it. The " INSTRUCTIONS " say to prime with an oil primer,no problem. In this order: Paste one sheet at a time, Book. Size walls with thinned wallpaper glue. Install wallpaper. I've never sized right before a sheet goes up. There's always been some drying time, and I've always used a clear prep coat over oil. Any insight on working with this product and/or proper prep work would be helpful
Thanks, Ric

Ric,

My experience with Twigs is that they are a tad behind the times. And I will not get into "attitude" displayed when I've called them.

Back in the 70's any oil primer with a glue size worked with every pulp I installed. But with the new VOV laws, I can not wholeheartedly recommend all oil primers. There are some that will work, but much debate and opinions are associated with that philosophy.

"Paste one sheet at a time, Book." ????? That sounds like instructions for the DIY'er or H.O. Or for wheat paste mixed thick. But what pro pastes, books, and hangs this type of paper one strip at a time?

I would follow procedures that you have found to work in the past.

Experience supersedes generic instructions, IMHO

If the instructions are still saying "glue", that should tell you how old they are.

I'd suggest Roman Adhesives Ultra Prep, their white pigmented primer. The stuff is billed as a latex replacement for oil. I know others say they are also, but this one hasn't let me down. I would agree, go with what works!

I would use Gardz first then roman Ultra prime.the Gardz will penetrate the ceiling flat and lock it down,Sorry don't know anything about that product . I do know that they don't always state the sequence of the installation steps, in the proper order.

Thanks to all. Your right Bill, experience trumps all. I've been seeing alot of different papers in the last 2 years and it's been humbling. Sometimes you need to Keep It Simple Stupid (KISS Theory) My buisness has turned hard to the high end market and One screw up can set you back. Knowledge is power so I'm always asking. Starting with Gardz makes sence to me and topping it off with Ultra Primeis great to hang over. Thanks Again, Ric

Nice catch Guy regarding the Gardz as a first coat to seal things up. I've used the Gardz over drywall repairs and skim coating and it certainly makes sense for "insurance" purposes to use it on the, more than likely, flat/porous ceiling paint. Follow that up with the Roman's Ultra Prime and I would not be losing any sleep at all... ;)

The D.L.Lyons went up fine.I had to cut the prep process down a bit due to time restraints. How does someone hand you $6000.00 worth of hand painted wallpaper and say you need to finish today because furnishings are coming the next. The flat paint was sound so I just did a good coat of Gardz. No time for the Romans. I'm new to Gardz but I think I really like it. The paper hung real nice and looked good 3 days later. Fingures crossed. Should be fine. Thanks to all,
Ric

Gardz should be fine to hang over if your using a heavy-duty premix. In a pinch, lightly sand and size it.
