Thanks for your help I went to the house and surveyed the job yesterday. I checked under the mural carefully. There was no musllin behind the murals. I kinda of knew that from 5 years before on seeing these murals. There is only blankstock and they are on plaster walls. The owner tried taking a section of the wall down but stopped because of the process and the weight. I took alot of pictures of all the scenes also the panels of plaster they took off. The decorator was from Beverly Hills some 60 years ago and is gone. The owner called France and found out that the mural is over 200 years old and not made anymore. It's Captain Cooks Expeidition. The paper is on very brittle paper. There are alot of creases and overlaps. I told the owner I would do further investigation and get back to her.

Do you have any ideas where I can go in doing research for a conservator. I've never worked with one.

Thanks,
Dennis George, C.P. :headslap: :help:

Very exciting! That's a well known French panoramic. If it is actually 200 years old it would have been printed on rag paper, which is a plus for conservation. Off the top of my head I don't know when the last printing of that paper was. If I find out I'll let you know. If it's actually an original it is definitely valuable.

I didn't mention it in my previous post but removing the entire wall is another approach.:banghead:

I'm located in New England and don't know any conservators in California but I can give you some leads to follow:

American Institute of Conservation
(http://www.conservation-us.org/)
New England Conservation Association (http://www.neconservationassociation.org/archive/200708meetings.html)

Northeast Document Conservation Center (http://www.nedcc.org/home.php) (Should be able to give you some leads in CA.)

T.K. McClintock Studio TKM Ltd. Tel. 617 666 9010. (He is the best wallpaper conservator in my area and has an international reputation.)

Let us know as things proceed.

A little bit of historical information on this panoramic.

This is referred to as "Les voyages du capitaine Cooke" but the original title is "Les Sauvages de la Mer Pacifique". It was printed by Dufour and the designer was Jean-Gabriel Charvet. The first edition was printed in 1804 but still not sure how long it was printed for. A complete set is 20 panels numbering left to right and was printed in color.

Here is an article (http://nga.gov.au/conservation/Paper/LesSauv.cfm) on this panoramic and it's conservation that will give you some interesting information. Here's another one (http://www.captaincooksociety.com/ccsu4152.htm).

It's amazing what they could do with wallpaper in 1800!

Dennis, how's the condition of it ? You said it had been repaired and poorly.

Is it still clear and crisp overall? Unfortunately some folks don't realize what they got and mistreat these gems.

Like the cleaning lady who wipes the chair rail and other trim with a wet rag and doesn't know to avoid the "wallpaper"
