Hello! I am a decorative painter who is interested in starting a business making hand painted wallpapers. I have 15 years experience in the business, just need to make the transition from walls to paper. I am having trouble finding a source for a suitable paper to work on and am not sure which papers to use, i.e. which will be durable, etc. It was suggested to me to use wallpaper liner, but I am not sure that is the best choice. I would be using paints like latex and oil house paints mixed with glazes, and some acrylic artist paints. Some papers would be gilded. I am also interested in your opinions about specialty papers such as unbleached mulberry and Japanese rice papers and the like. Any suggestions and sources would be most appreciated. And if anyone has any questions about decorative painting techniques and materials, please feel free to email.

I would appreciate any help that could be given as I have run into a wall with my research. Thanks in advance to anyone who responds.

Sincerely, Joyce Lahmidi

Joyce,
You should contact Ed Hovnanian (no relation to the builder) of Cavalier Handprints. He has been in the paper business since he was a teenager, and he is as knowledgable as they come. He and his wife run a small facility in Edison, where they make liner, handprints, textiles, and more. Ed is also a Guild member. 732 287-9595. Or wallliner.com .
