Don
after reading your post I got to thinking about the last time I "cleaned" out my machine......April, May...hmmm..I keep meaning too, but it is so nice to keep it in the big contractor bag and just scrape the edges before I put it away and a minimal cleaning when I need it ...anyway it is clean just hasn't been emptied in months....but winter is coming (freezing is a different issue)...I used to be a freak about cleanign it out if I wasn't going to use it the next day clean it ..if I was done for the week clean it....you get the idea....life is too short to make more work for myself. isn't that why I bought a machine in the first place. So to all thtose who bag it or rubbermaid it or what ever you do to keep it fresh without cleaning it out..salute !
Bye Mark

Hey Mark,
Good poll.
Ya know, that would be a good one for all members to take.
Should we steer more than Bostonians to it ??

How about taking this poll to the Public Discussion area, where it might give non-members something to chew on? I am searching for ways to attract new blood.

We should definitely put it out there.
How do you do that ?

I clean my machine (40" Advance) usually at the end of each work week. In the winter, I go to the local self -serve car wash and hit it with the high pressure hose. That baby sparkles!

I do the self serve car wash in winter too..lol
I have too amend my cleaning ritual as well , I can't let the machine sit out in the truck in summer ..this past summer it got pretty funky....some funky,chunky, mold funky...but that is partially because I now use two machines and one can sit awhile between uses. I will clean it if I'm switching to the other machine...which is a 40" Advance great buy...although my 29" Tapo is still the most used...Tim , you still like ...I still have two for sale

Good Poll;
I have three comments.
1. I commend those who don't clean it out till the gears stop spinning, but be careful. Ever look under the hood of your wife's car, see that the engine is all gunked up, spray it with degreaser then hose it off....then she tells you the car won't start and it costs $300 to get it fixed because "someone" got something wet!
2. A "disposable" paste machine would be a novel idea, but how many of us still rinse out and re-use those "disposable" tray liners?!
3. What "other" can there be?!! I'd be interested in seeing those answers!

Well, looks like I'm the only one (so far) who empties and cleans daily. But those of you who know me, know how particular
( or peculiar:banana: ) I am. I just can't stand using a sticky machine...I want it clean and dry every day.

My Tapo 29 has been sitting on a job since late November, filled with 234.
Its in a Tupperware type box, with a couple wet sponges thrown in. I'm pretty sure it hasn't dried up, but completely sure it has grown an inch of mold on it! :banana: Frankly, I'm scared to look in it.

It's probaly fine , the only thing you may need to worry about is freezing this time of year. Although, I would guess it would be a good idea to empty it..:lol: , before the next job.
I just broke out the machine I had aside for you to do a pre paste job. The other machine is filled with 880. Now I have two to clean , back to the car wash.

Depends on what type of machine I am using.When I am using my paste well I clean it out every other day.That machine is so easy to clean that it only takes a few minutes to do....The longest I go with a roller machine is a week.
The longer I wait the more damage is done to the gears or roller bars.

There should have been another choice between the once a week and spritz and go until the gears stop turning, that would have been my choice. I hope to do it once a week, sometimes that doesn't happen. It's covered with plastic between uses, if its gotten chunky or moldy it's cleaned now

Mark,
taking the paste machines to the carwash is a good idea;
how long does it take to dry the inside of your van though?

I agree with BigAngel. I clean my 62" after every job but strain paste and spritz between moving shop. I think thats where the "other"s came from.

I clean mine out every day unless I'm going with the same adhesive the next day. I'll wait to clean until I'm done with the job. Seems like it can't get funky and moldy if you're using it every day. Dried, or mostly dry, 234 is a sono fabeech to get out if you wait too long.:eek: The GH34 and wheat mix ain't much better, signs that those two mixes are pretty dang good for sticking paper to walls for the long haul. I keep my Tapo 29, Mark's old one he posted about earlier here, in a Rubbermaid container, so that keeps it pretty fresh overnight. The new Tapo 40 will get a cleaning daily, since there's not a container big enough for it. I say WILL get cleaned because tomorrow is the first time I'm using it.

Here's a tip for easy cleaning of a machine. Take out the guts, and spray the resevoir surface and all parts that don't touch the paper/paste with WD-40. Wipe out the excessive, but don't completely dry, and put the guts back in. If you get paste dried or caked on the sides or back, it will spray out with ease. Another way is to do the same pieces/areas with a good coat of turtle wax. Paste will dry, but not be stuck to the surfaces. Its really nice on the gears; you can just dunk them in a bucket of water, and the paste falls right off.
