View Full Version : Trimming dilema

I am using wallpaper for a design project that requires the paper be trimmed into two small sizes (10.75” X 7.25” and 9.5" X 12.5"). The last time we needed the paper trimmed, we used a commercial paper printer, however this proved to be inefficient and costly. We need quantitiies of between 1k and 3k. Can wallpaper be trimmed by machine? If so, is it accurate? Can anyone point me in the direction of someone to trim it by machine? OR, will it have to be trimmed by hand? If so, does anyone have a resource for that?

THANKS

Hi Hilary,
Up to 3,000 (3k) pieces of wallcovering less then a square foot each?...this is penance for something you did in a previous lifetime?:help:
I wish I could suggest some sort of commercial establishment to help you out. (What about a place that makes cardboard boxes or packaging?) What I can suggest is making templates either out of plexiglass or sheet metal. I suspect these pieces of wallcovering need to be just about perfectly consistent and true, not to mention a consideration for potential expansion when (if) the wallcovering is pasted. These templates must be made very carefully and precisely.
I'd like to learn more of the project...a computer generated digital projection? Hope you find some answers!:)

Chuck. Thanks for your reply. The trimmed paper will not be used in the traditional way. Rather, once trimmed, it will be slipped under the plastic cover of a 3 ring binder and as well as a DVD case. The different patterns and the fact that it is vintage wallpaper adds personality to the design. As an alternative, we've looked into offset and digital printing of paper with the wallpaper patterns, however the client is set on using actual wallpaper. They do not understand that it is not the easiest of assignments.

I think an actual print shop would be your best bet - they cut reams of paper to different sizes all the time. Somewhere that does business cards, flyers, postcards - not a cheapo outfit, they wouldn't have the equipment, but a custom printing place would.

thanks so much for reposnding. that's the route i've been exploring for 6 mos. unfortunately, commerical printers have had difficulty with the curl of the paper. it has to be sheeted first and them trimmed and they have had trouble maintaing consistent size and acceptable tolerance.

Hi,

We are a wide format digital printer.

We have the ability to print process color on virtually any substrate in any size in as little as 1 piece prints.

Pricing can run from $15 - $100 per square foot depending on size and material requested.

Our production time is 48 hours if substrate is in stock. Custom materials would be quoted on request.

Thank you,

Richard
