I need to remodel my modular - but I'm worried about painting over that nasty vinyl wall paper attached to the sheetrock! I can't strip it, don't want to wallpaper over it, so I guess I'll PAINT it...but will it start peeling?

I would wash the walls down with TSP, apply a coat of Bullseye 123 or Cover Stain by Zinnser (avail. at all Big Box stores) then paint. But remember, this is coming from a paperhanger!

Being both,I woud say the same, except if you find a real oil nased primer, that would be best.

Wouldn't this be a situation for which Roman's "Multi-task" was developed?

Personally I would do all I could to strip it, as you never know when it will let loose from the sheetrock.

Can I assume you have tried to strip and have determined it is hung on the RAW sheetrock with absolutely no primer or other prep coat before? That is the ONLY time I would seriously consider painting or papering over existing wallcovering, and only after trying EVERYTHING to strip.

Bill, I do believe this type wall decor described is NOT strippable at all. It is shipped fresh from the factory with the graphic printed directly on the substrate. This is definitely a case of prime over and paint.

I have successfully hung paper over vinyl wallcovering-on-raw drywall in a modular. Drywall was connected by matching molding strips; joints had not been butted and taped. The paper was intact and adhered well to the wall. All attempts to remove resulted in complete removal of drywall face, too.

I filled large gaps, sanded the wall surface to knock down gloss on vinyl, primed with BIN, and hung a bridging liner. Then I primed the BL and hung the paper. Looks great, end of wall flaws, you'd never know the room hadn't been drywalled flat to begin with.

Thank you all so much! Now I can go on and clean my little heart out!
