Re: Maya Romanoff Mother of pearl "Aphrodite"

A couple of months ago ,while working in the showroom,I was asked by a Wilmington,N.C designer how many MOP tiles she would need to do her 19'x7.5' wall. When I got home I did a scaled drawing of the wall and called her to tell her the amount. She had an installer in N.C. who was to do the job so I was doing this as a favor to the showroom and the designer and told her ,that if the installer had any questions ,he could call and I would answer to the best of my ability.Well, a few weeks ago after fielding multiple questions from the installer ,the designer called ,said he had bailed, would I come up to install. The answer was yes ,I estimated three days to prime and install ,two travel days.and maybe a chill day on the end .When I arrived ,It was evident, that this was a homeowner with an aquired "designer" label to be able to purchase at designer prices, doing her own house and the 19' wall that I questioned more than once, was actually a bathroom with 8 walls, six inside corners ,two outside corners, adding up to 19' in total width, needing a total of 160 some odd cuts as opposed to the 50 or 60 anticipated.after agreeing on an extra charge for the added time and expenses ,I jumped in ,by myself,(I would have brought help ,if I had only known) and finished six full days later.Moral of the story, squeeze out every bit of info possible on a job or go visit on a recon mission before hand.It all worked out in the end ,and this product is gorgeous.Clearcoated after install.

I just did a 4 x 5 foot back of a book shelf in wall a while back in this material and I can really appreciate all the hard work that went in to this project. You should enter this project into the WWWW contest next year.

    Guy

I have installed this one too and man can I appreciate the work you put into this. I was put into a position to having to charge extra due to the need to install on the 45 degree angle. I also needed to add a significant amount due to that type of install. If anyone gets a call for Aphrodite , do note the correct installation procedures and adjust for time spent installing and amount of material needed! It added close to 5 man days to a 6 man day job

    Great job!!

Thanks folks.Mark, you are so right about the extra time. Aphrodite is the most time consuming an of all of the Mother of Pearl products. I just took four days off to recuperate

Guy: Did you wrap the outside corners? I was looking at a MOP job the other day and they had wrapped the outside corners. Is there a special technique for this like a heat gun? What is the BM "Stay Clear" used for?

Re: Maya Romanoff Mother of pearl "Aphrodite"

John,No I did not wrap the corners ,inside or outside.I have heard of someone wrapping them after soaking in water but I do not .I don't know what a heat gun would do to this stuff ,it being a real shell product.Cut to the corner and then template (or measure carefully from your plumbline) the continuing piece so you can re plumb .I do the full row ceiling to floor so that you know which is your least wide piece for plumbing your continuing row.The Acrylic polyurethane is used in high moisture areas ,after I caulk all of the joints and the full perimeter of the installation. If using a silicone caulk clearcoat before caulking.

By the way how did that wrapped outside corner look?was the shell popping off? Also as Chris mentioned on another thread about Beadazzled,if the corner is not perfect(and how many are),you will be out of plumb

    GREAT JOB!!

and, yes, Vinny LaRusso will be doing a round column at the convention.

If you have any left over, soak it and you will be amazed what can be done with it.

Maybe, Vinny will read this and get some notes up here for you guys.

In checking with Cavalier, Ed said that the backing on these tiles are of a nonwoven material.

anyway, definitely beautiful work. CONGRATS! e
