    Exclamation The Guild Goes International!

The NGPP is hosting its first ever international event in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada on October 1st and 2nd, 2010. See the attached PDF's for full details. All are welcome, both Guild and non-Guild members.

The Friday session is a full-day hands-on class training installers to work with various high end materials and gain skills in table trimming, templating and pasting cleanly. This class is limited to the first 24 registrants at a cost of $150 – that’s less than half a day’s work for most of us.

Saturday will be a fast paced program with demonstrations of tips and techniques covering all aspects of the trade from proper removal and wall prep to commercial and high-end. There will also be a tradeshow with professional hand tools not previously sold in Canada as well as the opportunity to see and try out different pasting machines, lasers, tables etc. Access to this show is only $50 and is free for Guild members; you are guaranteed to get back that cost many times over in what you will learn, along with discounts and product samples.

Additionally, there is a session for design professionals called ‘Specify With Confidence!’ to assist in learning about different types of wallcovering, measuring and estimating accurately, the aesthetics of pattern and seam balance and in communicating with installers. Cost for this class is $50 and class space is limited.

To register for any of these sessions, go to www.ngpp.org and click on the link under ‘upcoming events’.

Hope to see you there! Feel free to email any questions to bokstrom@shaw.ca

Hey- take care of our boy, KL, would you? He's shy, and probably won't ask, but he'd really like to see/hear the UGA-Colorado game at 7 on Sat.- make sure it's on wherever he is. And he love barbeque- so take somewhere he can get a good moose rib.

Well, I think KL survived - barely. You'll have to get him to tell the tale of being hauled into the interrogation room at Customs. Too funny. We had actually given up on him -figured he'd grabbed a cab, but we did go back. Almost lost our instructor before the thing got off the ground...

I'd say the whole event went really well - we sold out his class (24) and had 30 design professionals at the 'Specify With Confidence' session that Sarah led on Friday. The tradeshow had 11 paying vendors plus another eight unmanned vendor tables. Boggess display sold out and everyone seemed pretty happy with the swag they scored. Top doorprize was a 6' workman scaffold, won by a duo from Calgary who promptly joined the Guild. We had three people join and pay at the event and several more are good prospects, so we are now up to eight members in Alberta with more to come. We'll be doing follow up in a couple of weeks and try to meet up again a couple of times to keep up the enthusiasm. Some are really psyched about New Orleans.

I'll try to pull together an article for the next Installer with some photos and details. Julie Otto came and shot lots of video, so look for that on the website soon.

He was very complimentary about the event, which means he didn't get to see the game.

if only such events were available in ireland, sadly not,i do question the term seam balance as it sounds a little like slick jargon although i may be wrong, i presume the meaning is that of perfect butt joins?

    Re: The Guild Goes International!

Seam balance is meaning you balance out the panels/seams on a wall for aesthetics. This is usually done with grass cloth, textiles, or similar type paper.
Imagine having a wall that is 130" wide, and you are installing a grass cloth that is 36" wide. Without balancing you could have 3 panels at 36" wide, and the last panel would be 22" wide. It just wouldn't look good.
To balance the seams on the wall, you would trim each 36" panel down to 32.5", and all 4 panels would be equal, or balanced. Does that make sense?
