2007 CHARITY HANG at J.S.I.
(view pictures/ print version)
About the Charity,
Julian Street Inn
Julian Street Inn (JSI), InnVision’s shelter for the seriously mentally ill, is the only homeless shelter of its kind in Santa Clara County. JSI provides a safe haven and a clean and caring environment for the mentally ill who live on the street. They offer shelter from the senseless beatings and robberies the homeless often experience. JSI also has a Day Rehabilitation Program offering individuals opportunities
to learn new skills and make changes in their lives. JSI clients are given support and encouragement to participate in “normal” activities of daily living such as making their bed and taking care of personal hygiene and grooming. Classes are also provided on social skills, anger management, drug issues, men’s and woman’s issues, as well as classes on poetry and art. JSI also has a specially funded SafeHaven Program for those who can benefit from a longer stay at the shelter.
When all the work was done…
here’s what the InnVision Community Relations Coordinator, sent in a note to our Chapter:
“In a word...amazing!! Thanks to the phenomenal efforts of The Northern CA Paperhanger Team, the Julian Street Inn has been transformed! It’s beautiful, calming and refreshing to the eye. It gives hope...we all need beauty in our lives. But your group has done more than brought improvement to a drab space. You’ve brought dignity to a “family” of homeless clients who have long been forgotten. The compliments from everyone have been endless! We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for the wonderful gift of joy you have given. You’ve truly allowed our clients (and staff) to feel the meaning of InnVision -The Way Home.”
Warmest Regards, Jaynie Neveras

FINISHING UP
“We’rrreee BAAACCKK…” was the greeting of the day as Northern California Chapter volunteers descended on the Adult Day Health Care Center in Half Moon Bay, CA this past August. If this sounds familiar, it should. Just a couple of years ago we completed the first half of this remodeling project for the “Coastsiders”. If you don’t remember the Coastsiders or were not able to attend the event, let me tell you a little about them. Since 1982, the center has offered a daily program of activities and health services for local seniors including: Physical Therapy, Group Activities, Occupational Therapy, Nutritional Counseling, Hot Lunches, and lots more! Executive Director and RN, Janie Bono has directed the staff for the past 7 years. The staff includes Registered Nurses, Therapists, a Social Worker, and several well trained, caring individuals.
From an outsider’s point of view, I can’t imagine a nicer group of people than the staff at the Coastsiders. Every person who works there is dedicated to making the seniors lives a little better. Ms. Bono is very dedicated to the seniors and works extremely hard, including many extra hours spent on fund raising events. However, she didn’t think twice when asked to spend extra hours at the center painting and preparing the walls for the charity hang. We wanted to do something special for her, so we covered the walls in her office with not one, but two coordinating colors of Torn Wallpaper. The new wallpaper looked so fabulous Janie exclaimed, “My office looks so great, it looks like I got a promotion!”
This year’s charity hang event took a little more effort to get off the ground since we had to coordinate materials with what we had previously installed. We were not able to get the same 27 inch vinyl from Imperial Wallcoverings since they had been bought by Blue Mountain; who does not carry that type of wallcovering. However, FSC Wallcoverings was very generous with their donation of 20 single rolls of Paper Illusions Torn Wallpaper that we hung in three different offices. Fortunately Chapter President, Larry Charon had some extra fabric backed vinyl from a job he had completed previously. Surprisingly, it coordinated beautifully with the old wallpaper, as well as the new paper we had chosen. With the 60 linear yards of goods Larry donated we were able to wallpaper a hallway and a bathroom. Despite a few obstacles, we accomplished all we had planned.
None of this would have been possible without the marvelous volunteers and the generosity of our National Associate members of NGPP. Our heartfelt thanks and appreciation goes out to these incredible individuals:
Manufacturers include:
Charles MacHarg at Scotch Paints donated the primer.
Frank Nicholson at Gardner-Gibson donated the adhesives.
Sabeen Khan at FSC Wallcoverings arranged for the wallcovering donation.
Volunteers who donated the labor include:
Earl Wanbaugh, Chapter Member
Our newest Chapter Member, Savanna Hobbs (who traveled over 320 miles round trip)
Lauretta Jenkins, Charity Hang Committee Chair
Donald Foreman, CP-Chapter VP
Donald’s apprentice Sherice Brown
Larry Charon, Chapter President (prep and hanging)
Jean Boles, Chapter Editor
Gerri Beauvais, CP-Chapter Member (prep and hanging)
Former Chapter member, Fred Crum
Our Annual Chapter BBQ followed the event. Many thanks to Janie for providing us with a tasty breakfast and especially for helping with BBQ duty; and thank you to everyone who brought delicious dishes to share! Hope we have this much fun at next years charity hang!

CHARITY HANG 2004

The
newly constructed Ronald McDonald House at Stanford in Palo
Alto, CA was the location
for the May 2004 charity
hang
hosted
by the Northern California Chapter of NGPP. The beautiful
new buildings (there are two) offer many comforts to their
residents,
including a Computer Room, Library, Kitchens for residents
to use (in addition to a large commercial kitchen), Laundry
Rooms, a Children’s Playroom, a Teen Area, and a free-standing
round aquarium in the main atrium. In
addition to caring for the families of hospitalized children,
the Ronald McDonald
House Charities support children’s programs worldwide.
These include:
• A fleet of advanced, custom-designed vehicles that deliver low
cost medical and dental care to needy children where they live
• Organizations that perform corrective surgeries for children
born with facial deformities which cause emotional trauma, social
isolation, and can threaten lives
• Child abuse prevention programs with emphasis on prenatal care,
positive parenting, and suicide prevention
• Immunizations for mothers and babies through UNICEF
• Scholarships to students with limited access to educational and
career opportunities
• And local chapters of the charity support many other programs
as well. The
charity hang event went very well because of all the help and
donations we received.
When we arrived the walls
had already
been smoothed and primed by the very same construction crew who
built the structures. Since the site was so very large we had
to set up our pasting machines, and cutting tables in three different
areas. We got to work and installed 27 inch solid vinyl in a
small herring bone pattern in the Dining Room and Library of
Bldg. 1, and a leaf pattern in the Computer Room of Bldg. 2.
In the Children’s Play Room, Teen Area and Computer Room
of Bldg. 1, we hung 21 bolts of border at ceiling height. The
staff of the Ronald McDonald House provided delicious pastries,
coffee and juice to start our day, and pizza, salad and sodas
to keep us working!
We need to express our gratitude to these wonderfully
generous companies, without whose support, these charity hang
events would
not be possible:
Scotch Paint/DrawTite Charles MacHarg
Brewster Wallcoverings Kendra Soderer
Imperial/Olney Wallcoverings
Gardner-Gibson Frank Nicholson
Zinsser Products Larry Magas
The Northern California Chapter members who gave
up their Saturday for this worthwhile event include: Lauretta
Jenkins, Larry Charon,
Earl Wanbaugh, Steve Shlee, Donald Foreman, Pax Cheng, Susie-Q
Conklin, and guest paperhanger, Fred Crum.
When
we were all done and the tools packed away, the Executive Director,
Honey Meir-Levi
had this to say: “Community support
such as yours makes this House possible today and in the future.
You have more than my gratitude. You also have the gratitude
of all the families who stay at the House. Thank you so very
much for helping to make this dream a reality!”
COMMUNITY PROJECT
HABITAT FOR HUMANITY
In February
2004, three Northern California Chapter members of the National
Guild of Professional Paperhangers got
together to complete a small community project for the Peninsula
Habitat
for Humanity office in Redwood City, CA. Peninsula Habitat houses
are built by volunteers and partner families. They work with
low income families to build decent affordable homes. These families
must have a strong desire to be homeowners and support the mission
of Peninsula Habitat which is: to build quality, affordable
ownership housing through volunteer efforts in long-term partnership
with qualified families. Each of the families in the program
is required to complete 500 hours of volunteer labor before they
purchase and occupy the house. Habitat works in partnership with
governments, individuals, faith communities, foundations, corporations
and civic groups, all which assist them by contributing time
and funds, and helps them acquire building sites.
The project began last Fall, when Northern Calif. Chapter Associate
Member Larry Magas with Zinsser products, donated the primer
and adhesive for the project. We were able to utilize the new
Zinsser Plus System since we were installing a 15 oz. commercial
vinyl in a warm neutral tone. Step 1, (the primer) was applied
by Habitat volunteers and allowed to cure. We used Step 2 (the
adhesive) to install the goods on both sides of a 9 ft. wall
located at the main entrance to the building. The Northern California
Guild members who volunteered were: John Krause of Walnut
Creek, Steve Shlee of Santa Clara and Lauretta Jenkins from the
Santa Cruz area.
Peninsula Habitat's Administrative Director, Jacquey Carey generously
provided us with a delicious lunch of deli sandwiches and surprised
us when she presented with us some great Habitat tee shirts for
our efforts.
Despite the rain storm that hit the entire Bay Area that day,
we overcame snarled traffic, fallen trees, downed power lines,
and even mud slides to get this project taken care of. I never
knew how much paperhangers had in common with the US Postal
Service till now! It was my pleasure to work alongside our
two newest
chapter members, John and Steve. Both worked diligently without
complaint (except for the weather conditions) and the installation
looked great! We were privileged to have Larry Magas from Zinsser
drop by to check on the project and take some photos. We all
enjoyed helping out Peninsula Habitat and look forward to our
next chapter charity project.

Fall Fix Up
The COASTSIDE ADULT DAY HEALTH CENTER in Half Moon Bay, California,
received a welcomed facelift this past August when the Northern
California Chapter of the National Guild of Professional Paperhangers
held their annual Charity Hang there. Affectionately known
to
the locals as "the Coastsiders", the Center offers
a daily program of activities and health services for local
seniors
including: Physical Therapy, Group Activities, Occupational Therapy,
Nutritional Counseling, Hot Lunches, and lots more!
The event brought together
skilled professionals from all over the Bay Area, to update the
look and style of the Dining Room, Activity Room and adjacent
Hallways. Chapter Member, Larry Charon who was instrumental in
organizing the Charity Hang, worked the week prior to the event
painting the trim and the rest of the walls. The much needed redecorating
included installing 44 single rolls of 27 inch vinyl and 12 bolts
of border; all donated by Sheila Daniels at Imperial Home Décor
Group. Chapter Associate member, Jerry Peterson from Gardner-Gibson
arranged for the donation of the adhesives for the event. Northern
California Chapter Members who donated their time and talents
include: Larry Charon, Gerri Beauvais, Jean Boles, Donald Foreman,
Lauretta Jenkins, John Krause and Earl Wanbaugh. Other volunteers
include paperhangers Steve Shlee, and Fred Crumb. Janie Bono,
Executive Director of the center also helped with the painting
and provided lots of tasty treats and cool drinks for the crew.
After the job was completed, here's what she had to say: "What
a fabulous job! All the participants, staff and volunteers would
like to thank you very much for your time in providing the Center
with such beautiful wallpaper. Everyone is delighted with the
results, it looks beautiful!"
When the last piece of wallcovering
was hung and the last tool was put away, they made their way to
the home of Chapter Member, Larry Charon, his wife Suzanne, and
daughter, Aliana. The hard working volunteers enjoyed delicious
BBQ, home baked goodies, and had a fun time relaxing. Chapter
President, Lauretta Jenkins, shared these comments, " I believe
the Northern California Chapter and the Guild as a whole are a
group of truly charitable craftspeople who give freely to brighten
the lives of others. We look forward to these events each year
and can't wait till the next opportunity arises!"
