2004 Contest Winners
The National Guild of Professional Paperhangers is proud and honored to work alongside The Zinsser Company who has sponsored the prestigious Winning Walls With Wallcovering
Contest for the past four years. This contest is open to any Guild member who feels he/she has done a project worthy of someone taking notice. Some projects are large, some small… the size is not significant. The entries are judged blindly by number with identifying information protected. The Paint and Decorating Retailers Association (PDRA) has hosted the judging for the past several years and has invited individuals from designers to installers to become judges. There are cash prizes and marble trophies for first and second place winners and beautiful walnut engraved plaques for honorable mention recipients. There are three categories: residential, commercial, and specialty. Besides the personal satisfaction comes national recognition and Guild pride. This contest epitomizes the uniqueness of the wallcovering industry.
The winners of the 2004 Winning Walls With Wallcovering
Contest were announced by Tom McNicholas, Vice President of Marketing and Jack Ford, Manager of Industry Relations of The Zinsser Company and Joe Parker, C.P., NGPP President at a luncheon, also sponsored by The Zinsser Company on September 10th in Orlando, Florida during the
NGPP Convention & Tradeshow. Entries were submitted in a bound format with descriptions of the project along with before, during, and after photos.
The honorable mention award in the residential category went to Gary Lucas, C.P., Lucas Wallcoverings, Columbus, OH for his Bradbury & Bradbury powder room; second place in this category was awarded to Elsie Kapteina,
C.P., Wallpaper HangUps by Elsie, Bethel, CT who delighted a client with imagination in papering a dining room; and first place went to Michael Baughman, Baughman Wallcoverings, Oceanside, CA who took hand-painted muslin mural panels to
transform a child’s playroom into a castle.
In the commercial category, honorable mention went to Steve Terranova, Novacraft, Lakewood, OH who brought jungle life to a newly constructed pediatric clinic; second place in this category went to Michael Baughman, Baughman Wallcoverings, Oceanside, CA who used murals to cover the walls in a Las Vegas casino; and the first place winner in the commercial category was Charles Maercklein, Finishes of Design, Butler, WI for his restoration of a 156 year-old building.
The final category announced was the specialty category where honorable mention went to Janie Reeves, Design 2 Finish, Windsor, PA who created a great display room area for a kitchen and bath design company; second place in the specialty category was awarded to John Damme, C.P., Exquisite Interiors, Hickory Hills, IL who finished an “architectural puzzle” with several varying sizes of murals; and first place went to Stephen Sullivan, Sullivan’s Wallpapering, Youngstown, OH who “wowed” the audience with a pre-9/11 photomural pasted on a 12’ by 8’ foot mini-blind. The timing was coincidental and America will follow this piece of art to Sotheby’s in New York City where it will be auctioned off.
Each entry in this contest has a story. In many cases, pictures do not do justice to the entry as the story gives the details and challenges involved with each project. The Guild is proud of its members and their accomplishments and thanks The Zinsser Company for allowing our members to highlight their talents through this contest.
